Real Stories of Real Impact

As one of the subgrant awardees, the Eva B. Dykes Library & Archives of Oakwood University ("OU"), is excited and extremely grateful to the HBCU Library Alliance and the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to finally be able to begin a project that had been a dream. This grant is helping to digitize the collection of OUr Music which, up to this moment, had remained in archives in its original format, some of which are deteriorating. Phase I of digitizing music that was captured on the Oakwood campus, sung by Oakwood students, groups, and choirs is mostly completed. We hope to continue digitizing OU music and spoken word so that others can hear it, appreciate it, use it for research, inspiration and most importantly, preserve it for future generations so that they will not forget it.

Without the HBCU Library Alliance, my college experience and my life after college would likely be entirely different. Because of this program, I’ve been able to speak at an HBCU Library Alliance Membership Meeting, participate in programs and workshops, meet amazing people, and explore collections of spectacular material. I sincerely hope future generations of young adults will have a similar experience.

The HBCU Library Alliance 10th Membership Meeting was phenomenal! I'm truly grateful for the Non-Director Library Staff Scholarship, which allowed me to gain invaluable insights. The sessions were enlightening, especially with speakers like Dr. Marybeth Gasman. A special thanks to HBCU Library Alliance staff for organizing such a superb event! I learned the importance of self-advocacy and collaboration among libraries in addressing educational disparities.

I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the transformative experience of the HBCU Library Alliance Summer Conservation Preservation Internship program. Being a part of this program introduced me to a career I have genuinely fallen in love with, one that has shaped not only my professional path but also my personal journey. My time in the program opened doors I never thought possible. It led me to become the first Black Art Bridges Conservation Fellow at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
